KAKAMEGA, 18 August 2026 — Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Kakamega has officially launched a five-day Coaching Introductory Course at Murhanda Senior School, reaffirming its commitment to strengthening coach education and developing football from the grassroots across the county.
The course, which commenced on Tuesday, 18 August 2026, brings together coaches and football enthusiasts seeking to acquire foundational coaching knowledge and improve their understanding of modern football training methods.
The launch was attended by FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei, Vice Chairman Ramdhan Balala, Treasurer Fred Lugalia, CEO Simon Karanga, and former FKF Kakamega Chairman/ current Murhanda MCA Hon. Elphas Shilosio. The course is being facilitated by CAF Instructor Fred Serenge, who will take participants through the five-day programme.
Speaking during the launch, FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei emphasised the importance of investing in coaches as part of the federation’s broader efforts to improve the quality of football in the county.
“The development of football begins with the development of our coaches. When we equip coaches with the right knowledge and skills, we create a strong foundation for the development of our players and our teams,” said Mudembei.
He added that FKF Kakamega was committed to creating more opportunities for coaches to access quality training and professional development.
“We want to see more coaches from Kakamega gaining recognised coaching qualifications and applying modern methods in their work. This course is an important beginning, and we encourage our coaches to take full advantage of the opportunity,” he added.
CAF Instructor Fred Serenge, who is leading the five-day course, highlighted the importance of continuous learning among coaches, noting that football is constantly evolving and coaches must remain ready to adapt.
“Coaching is a continuous learning process. The game is changing every day, and coaches must also continue developing their knowledge, understanding and practical skills. This course provides an important foundation for coaches who want to grow in the profession,” Serenge said.
Serenge further encouraged the participants to actively engage throughout the programme and to view the course as the beginning of a longer coaching journey.
“I encourage all the participants to ask questions, participate fully and make use of every session. What we are doing here is not only about completing a five-day course; it is about building coaches who can make a meaningful difference in the development of players,” he said.
FKF Kakamega CEO Simon Karanga said the federation recognises coach education as one of the key areas that must be strengthened if the county is to continue producing competitive teams and talented players.
“You cannot develop players beyond the level of the people coaching them. That is why coach education is very important to us. We want to build capacity among our coaches so that they can provide better training environments for our young players,” said Karanga.
He noted that the course provides an opportunity to establish a stronger coaching culture within Kakamega.
“Our ambition is to see coaches who understand the game, understand player development and can transfer that knowledge effectively to the players. This is one of the steps towards achieving that objective,” Karanga added.
Former FKF Kakamega Chairman and Murhanda Ward MCA Hon. Shilosio also welcomed the initiative, describing investment in football education as essential to the long-term development of the sport.
“Football has great potential to transform the lives of our young people, but that potential can only be realised when we invest in the people who guide and develop our players. Supporting coaches is therefore an investment in the future of football in Kakamega,” Hon. Shilosio said.
The presence of Vice Chairman Ramdhan Balala and Treasurer Fred Lugalia at the launch further demonstrated the federation’s commitment to ensuring that technical development remains a priority within its football programmes.
The five-day course will expose participants to fundamental coaching principles, training methodology, player development, session planning and other essential aspects of football coaching. Participants will also have an opportunity to learn from Serenge’s experience as a CAF instructor and interact with fellow coaches from different football environments.
For FKF Kakamega, the programme is part of a broader commitment to strengthening the football ecosystem at the grassroots level. Quality coaching is considered a critical component in identifying, nurturing and developing talented players who can progress to higher levels of the game.
The federation also hopes that the course will encourage more coaches within the county to pursue further coaching education and qualifications, creating a pool of knowledgeable and technically equipped coaches capable of supporting football development at clubs, schools, academies and community teams.
As the course continues at Murhanda Senior School, participants are expected to make the most of the opportunity by actively engaging in both theoretical and practical sessions.
The launch marks another milestone in FKF Kakamega’s efforts to build capacity within the football fraternity and strengthen the foundations upon which the county’s football future can be built.
