MUMIAS, KAKAMEGA COUNTY – June 1, 2026
Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Kakamega Branch has taken another significant step towards improving the quality of football officiating in the county after successfully conducting a two-day Mid-Season Physical Endurance Test (PET) for referees and match commissioners at the Mumias Sports Complex on May 31 and June 1, 2026.
The exercise brought together more than 100 registered referees and match commissioners from across the county, who underwent a series of medical assessments, agility drills, and physical fitness tests aimed at evaluating their readiness to officiate matches at various levels of competition, including FIFA, Kenya Premier League (KPL), National Super League (NSL), Division One, and Division Two.
The PET was led by Western Region National Executive Committee (NEC) Member Mr. Caleb Amwayi, who served as the chief instructor. Drawing from his vast experience in football officiating and administration, Mr. Amwayi guided participants through intensive training sessions designed to sharpen their understanding of the Laws of the Game while enhancing their physical preparedness.
Speaking during the exercise, Mr. Amwayi emphasized the importance of maintaining high officiating standards.
“Physical fitness is a key requirement for every match official. This PET ensures that our referees and match commissioners remain fit, competent, and ready to handle football matches at all levels while upholding the integrity of the game.”
The training combined practical demonstrations, fitness assessments, and interactive discussions, providing participants with valuable insights and skills necessary to manage matches effectively and confidently.
FKF Kakamega Branch Chairman Jeff Mudembei lauded the commitment shown by the officials and reaffirmed the branch’s dedication to strengthening football structures within the county.
“Our goal is to continuously improve the standards of football in Kakamega. Well-trained and physically fit match officials are essential for fair competition and the overall growth of the game. We will continue investing in capacity-building programmes that empower our referees and match commissioners.”
The event was attended by several FKF Kakamega Branch leaders, including Vice Chairman Ramadhan Balala, Secretary General Rajab Wangalwa, Youth Representative Joseph Kubati, Treasurer Fred Lugalia, and FKF Kakamega CEO Simon Karanga.
Also present were FKF Kakamega Referees Chairperson Margaret Atoko, Referees Secretary Mr. Majani, members of the referees committee, and other football stakeholders, demonstrating a united commitment towards the development of football officiating in the region.
According to the organizers, the PET exercise serves as a critical benchmark in selecting and maintaining a competent pool of match officials capable of overseeing football matches professionally and impartially.
The successful completion of the Mid-Season PET underscores FKF Kakamega’s commitment to raising officiating standards, promoting fair play, and supporting the continued growth and credibility of football across the county and beyond.
