Officials from Football Kenya Federation and SportPesa celebrate the landmark Ksh 1.12 Billion sponsorship deal during the signing ceremony in Nairobi.
The agreement, signed in Nairobi, is seen as a major boost to the sport’s revival, marking the return of substantial private sector support after a prolonged period of financial uncertainty in local football.
“A transformative chapter begins for Kenyan football,” said FKF President Hussein Mohammed. “We extend our gratitude to SportPesa for their belief in our vision. This partnership is a crucial advancement in attracting more collaborations, and we are resolutely committed to upholding the confidence you’ve placed in our hands.”

The FKF leadership acknowledged the challenges that have plagued the sport but expressed optimism that this renewed corporate faith would usher in stability and growth for the FKF Premier League (FKFPL) and beyond.
Among the dignitaries present at the signing was FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei, a member of the FKF National Leagues and Competitions Committee (LCC). He played an active role in lobbying for league clubs to benefit from sustainable funding and was instrumental in shaping the framework of the sponsorship.
“This is a breakthrough,” said Mr. Mudembei. “But if we are to attract and retain such partnerships, we must elevate the packaging of our league. Branding, professionalism, and visibility must improve. The current FKF leadership is doing the groundwork to rebuild the federation’s image — they deserve space and time to deliver.”
He also emphasized that while SportPesa’s commitment is a game-changer, the door remains open for more corporate sponsors to support Kenyan football at different levels.
The SportPesa-FKF deal is expected to support not only prize money for league winners but also go toward enhancing matchday operations, marketing, and administrative support for clubs.
This long-term investment could be the turning point Kenyan football has long awaited — a move that promises to reignite local talent development, competitive standards, and international recognition.
Eldoret, 27th July 2025 – Huruma Grounds in Eldoret came alive on Sunday as it hosted an exciting Three Counties Ladies Football Friendly Mini-League, featuring top women’s teams from Uasin Gishu, Elgeyo Marakwet, and Kakamega Counties.
The one-day event brought together Huruma Starlets (Uasin Gishu), Iten Queens (Elgeyo Marakwet), and The Iron Ladies Soccer Club (Kakamega) for a showcase of skill, determination, and women’s football development in the region.

The event was graced by notable football stakeholders, including FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei, FKF Uasin Gishu Chairman Peter Chesang, FKF Uasin Gishu Treasurer, FKF Uasin Gishu Youth Representative, as well as coaches and team managers from the three counties.

FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei praised the initiative, saying:

Opening Fixture: Iten Queens vs Iron Ladies
The day kicked off with a thrilling clash between Iten Queens and The Iron Ladies. Fans witnessed an entertaining match filled with attacking football and tactical brilliance, proving once again that Kenya’s women’s football has immense potential.
The Iron Ladies stamped their authority with a 3-0 victory over the Elgeyo Marakwet side, thanks to clinical finishing and solid teamwork.
Iron Ladies Technical Director and Head Coach Lemmy Easter said:
“We came here to compete and also learn. The girls executed the game plan perfectly. These inter-county events are vital for exposure and growth.”
Iten Queens Team Manager Mr. Ahmad admitted his side faced a tough opponent:
“Iron Ladies are experienced, and today they showed it. But this is a learning curve for us, and we will come back stronger.”
Iten Queens Coach Mr. Omondi added:
“Our players need more competitive matches like this. The gap is not huge; with better training, we will catch up.”
Huruma Starlets Coach Mr. Fred, whose team was also scheduled to play, expressed disappointment at the event being cut short:
“It’s sad that we couldn’t finish the fixtures. Our girls were ready, and such opportunities don’t come every day.”
Unfortunate End to the Event
Despite the promising start, the mini-league was abruptly cut short after a section of rowdy men stormed the grounds, claiming they had a right to use the pitch for the remainder of the day. The incident disrupted the event and left organizers and fans disappointed.

The Way Forward
Both FKF chairmen emphasized that such disruptions should never happen again and pledged to tighten coordination between event organizers, FKF branches, and local authorities.
FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei stated:
“Going forward, all events will have formal bookings and security arrangements in place. We want our players to enjoy football without interference.”
FKF Uasin Gishu Chairman Peter Chesang added:
“We will work closely with the county government and law enforcement to ensure grounds are properly secured. Women’s football deserves respect and protection.”
Plans are also underway to schedule a rematch for the unfinished fixtures and to create more structured inter-county women’s friendlies and tournaments to develop the sport among women.
FKF Kakamega branch has this morning launched a three-day new referees training program in Kakamega County, marking a significant step towards enhancing the local football scene. The introduction of these new referees is poised to not only increase the number of qualified officials on the field but also to address the growing demand for match officials as local football continues to gain popularity among fans and players alike. This comprehensive training initiative is focused on improving the quality of officiating in local football matches, ensuring that both players and spectators enjoy a fair and organized experience. Over 50 referee trainees are participating in a detailed workshop being held at Lirhembe Friends Church in Ikolomani Sub County from July 16th to 18th, 2025. Participants will engage in a variety of activities that include practical demonstrations, interactive sessions, and theoretical lessons designed to deepen their understanding of the game. The program, organized by the FKF Kakamega Branch, aims to equip new referees with not only the latest knowledge on FIFA regulations and match management techniques but also essential skills such as conflict resolution and effective communication, which are vital for officiating at all levels of competition.

The topics to be covered are extensive and designed to provide a robust foundation for aspiring referees and officials; they include not only the essential laws of the game, but also crucial aspects such as match management, effective player management, intricate offside interpretation, and the often-challenging handball rules. Additionally, the curriculum will address fitness assessments and critical decision-making under pressure, ensuring that attendees are well-prepared for the demands of officiating at various levels of competition. This initiative aims to elevate the standards of refereeing and foster a deeper appreciation for the intricacies of the game among participants.

Despite having a busy schooling schedule, the schools’ half-term and vacation days will speed up the leagues, according to the FKF Kakamega branch Chairman Mr Jeff Mudembei. While launching the leagues, the chairman reiterated that free time will be utilized like the half-term period to ensure all categories of youth leagues have been played across the county daily. “This will help us beat the FIFA calendar, even with the youths in schools; for sure, Kakamega is the home of football talents from what we’re seeing in our U13 youth leagues,” the chairman stated. He further emphasized the importance of these leagues in fostering not only talent but also discipline and teamwork among the young players. A step academy received 10 balls from the FKF Kakamega, which marks the beginning of a promising partnership aimed at nurturing football talent in the region. The federation has made a solid commitment to support A step in its mission to develop and mentor over 300 young talents, ranging from under 10, 13, 15, and 17. Starting from Mid-week fixtures to the weekend fixtures, there were several FKF Kakamega County League games all across the 7 zones of the Kakamega County League, showcasing a thrilling array of talent and competitive spirit among the teams. Fans flocked to the stadiums, eager to witness the electrifying action and support their local clubs as they battled for crucial points. With every match filled with intense moments and unforgettable plays, it was an action-packed week that not only highlighted the skills of the players but also reignited the passion for football in the community.
In zone A that comprises teams from Likuyani, it was a goal galore this past weekend. On Saturday, 19th April 2025, Mbururu FC hosted Melody United at Mbururu Primary, and the match turned into a spectacular display of football, resulting in a decisive 5-0 thrashing for the home team. Mbururu’s K. Calistus shone brightly during the match, netting a brace; he opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a stunning strike, showcasing his incredible skill and composure in front of goal.
