    The FKF Kakamega County League got underway on Sunday 2nd March 2025, showcasing an impressive record of over 80 teams participating across 7 competitive zones. This year’s league not only marks a significant milestone in terms of participation but also promises to deliver thrilling matches and incredible talent on display. During the opening day, there were 23 exciting matches that saw 46 teams in action, each vying for an early advantage in the standings. While spectators were treated to a fantastic display of skill and determination, it’s worth noting that some fixtures for match day 1 were unfortunately postponed to a later day due to unforeseen circumstances, raising anticipation for the next round of games and the impact they may have on the league’s dynamics.

    In Shinyalu, Shibuye Football Club showcased their strength with a commanding 2-0 victory over Shidodo FC, underlining their intent in this season’s league and demonstrating their capability as strong contenders for the title. The match was marked by impressive teamwork and strategic plays, thrilling the local fans in attendance and creating an electric atmosphere that fueled the players’ performance. Kambiri Township FC also impressed the audience, putting 2 past Young Simba in a decisive 2-0 victory, which highlighted their offensive prowess and defensive resilience, as they executed well-timed counterattacks and organized defense maneuvers.
    The players displayed remarkable stamina and grit throughout the game, leaving fans on the edge of their seats as they witnessed a series of near misses and spectacular saves. In another fixture, Sande and Shisokoro tied in a closely contested 1-1 draw, showcasing the competitive spirit of the league and leaving both teams and their supporters eager for future encounters.     NEC Member for Nairobi Region and AFC Leopards Chairman and other dignitaries launching the league as Rush FC battled vs Ikomero FC in the first match.

    FKF Kakamega branch launched the county league at Buchenya Grounds, an event that drew the attention of numerous local football enthusiasts and stakeholders eager to support the game. The launch was graced by, among other football dignitaries, NEC Member Nairobi Dan Shikanda, who emphasized the critical need for building local talents through the county league as a stepping stone for aspiring footballers. He passionately conveyed his vision of a future where professional players will emerge directly from the Kakamega County league, thus enriching the local football scene and providing opportunities for youth. In a gesture of support and encouragement, he also donated Ksh 10,000 as a motivation to the teams that participated in the launch, reinforcing the importance of dedication and hard work in the pursuit of football excellence. This event marks a significant milestone for the region, potentially transforming the landscape of local football and fostering a sense of community spirit among players and fans alike.

    Also in attendance were Washington Muhanji, a former Harambee Stars legend known for his remarkable skills on the field, who has since transitioned to a mentor role, inspiring young athletes in the community. Eugene Okello, the FKF Busia County Chairman, was present as well, actively engaging with attendees about local football initiatives. Former FKF Western Chairman Andrew Amukowa added valuable insights from his extensive experience in managing football affairs in the region. The referees committee was represented by the Chairperson, Margaret Atoko, alongside Jackson Makokha, who oversees the southern region, both emphasizing the importance of fair play and integrity in the sport. Additionally, Paul Anyera, The Patron of Ikonyero FC, Luke Lukhonjioa committee member specializing in leagues and competitions committee, contributed to the discussions regarding upcoming tournaments. He also highlighted the support from notable figures, also attending was the FKF Vihiga Vice Chairman. The FKF Kakamega County executive team was led by Chairman Jeff Mudembei, whose leadership has been pivotal in fostering football development within the area. Secretary General Rajab Wangalwa, Treasurer Fred Lugalia, Women Rep Emily Khasiro, and Youth Rep Joseph Kubati were also present, showcasing a diverse representation of FKF dignitaries who are committed to promoting the growth of football at all levels and bridging the gap between grassroots and professional leagues, ensuring a bright future for the sport in Kenya.

    In the curtain-raising match which promoted the recognition and importance of women’s football, East African Champions Red Commandos Butere girls proved their prowess after under 17 Harambee Starlet Joy Marvellous Angela showcased her exceptional skills by giving them a stunning hat trick in the 65th, 83rd, and 90th minute, hence winning 3-0 against the only Div 1 Ladies team in Kakamega County, The Iron Ladies. The match not only highlighted the talent present in women’s football but also served as a testament to the dedication and hard work invested by these ladies. AFC Leopards Chairman Dan Shikanda applauded the brilliant performance by the ladies’ teams, emphasizing the significant strides made in promoting women’s sports in the region, and he also commended the fresh start in Kakamega Football, which he believes will pave the way for more opportunities and visibility for female players in the future. Such initiatives are crucial in transforming perceptions and generating support for women’s football at all levels.

    The opening match of the Kakamega County League, which was a highly anticipated home match for Rush FC against visitors Ikomero FC, turned out to be an exhilarating thriller that saw the home team endure a disappointing defeat by managing to score only 2 goals against the visiting team, who expertly commanded the game with a remarkable total of 3 goals. The atmosphere at the stadium was electric, with supporters from both sides passionately cheering for their teams, and in the end, the patrons from each side congratulated both teams for their hard work and excellent performance on the pitch. In a display of sportsmanship, Rush FC’s patron promised Ikomero FC’s patron that the return match in their upcoming Zone G fixtures would be fiercely competitive, hinting at the intense rivalry brewing between the two teams. This thrilling encounter not only showcased the talents of each player but also strategically placed Ikomero FC at the top of the Zone G Table with 3 vital points, setting the stage for what could be an exciting season ahead.

    While launching the league, FKF Kakamega Chairman highlighted a series of significant changes and improvements aimed at fostering a more competitive environment for players and teams. One of the most notable adjustments is the reduction of the registration and affiliation fees from Ksh 18,000 to Ksh 10,000, alongside a drop in referees’ fees from Ksh 1,800 to Ksh 1,500. These changes are designed to encourage more teams to participate, thus expanding the league’s reach and enhancing its overall competitiveness. Additionally, the zoning of the County league into seven distinct zones has been strategically implemented to minimize travel costs, allowing teams to compete more frequently without the financial burden of extensive travel. For the 2024/2025 season, each zone will compete for a prize valued at over Ksh 30,000, which will include football kits to boost the players’ morale and pride in their teams. The overall County league will be determined through an exciting mini league format, where champions from each of the seven zones will battle it out, ensuring that the competition remains fierce and engaging. Importantly, there will be no participation cost in the mini league, making it accessible for all teams. For the County championship during the 2024/2025 season, a substantial prize pool exceeding Ksh 100,000 will be available, highlighting the commitment of the FKF Kakamega branch to rewarding excellence in the sport. The Chairman emphasized that as sponsorship opportunities materialize, these prizes, ranging from the zone level to the county level, will continue to grow larger and more attractive, promising exciting developments for the league. He also indicated that FKF Kakamega is actively scouting for potential sponsors, which signals that good things are on the horizon, further elevating the standards of local football and encouraging budding talent within the community.
