
FKF Kakamega branch has this morning launched a three-day new referees training program in Kakamega County, marking a significant step towards enhancing the local football scene. The introduction of these new referees is poised to not only increase the number of qualified officials on the field but also to address the growing demand for match officials as local football continues to gain popularity among fans and players alike. This comprehensive training initiative is focused on improving the quality of officiating in local football matches, ensuring that both players and spectators enjoy a fair and organized experience. Over 50 referee trainees are participating in a detailed workshop being held at Lirhembe Friends Church in Ikolomani Sub County from July 16th to 18th, 2025. Participants will engage in a variety of activities that include practical demonstrations, interactive sessions, and theoretical lessons designed to deepen their understanding of the game. The program, organized by the FKF Kakamega Branch, aims to equip new referees with not only the latest knowledge on FIFA regulations and match management techniques but also essential skills such as conflict resolution and effective communication, which are vital for officiating at all levels of competition.

Led by FIFA-accredited instructor Mr. Caleb Amwayi, who is also the esteemed Western Region FKF NEC member and the influential Chairman of the National Referees Committee, the comprehensive training program will include both theoretical classroom sessions and hands-on practical lessons to enhance participants’ understanding and skills. The topics to be covered are extensive and designed to provide a robust foundation for aspiring referees and officials; they include not only the essential laws of the game, but also crucial aspects such as match management, effective player management, intricate offside interpretation, and the often-challenging handball rules. Additionally, the curriculum will address fitness assessments and critical decision-making under pressure, ensuring that attendees are well-prepared for the demands of officiating at various levels of competition.
