FKF Kakamega Press Statement on Bingwa Fest Team Selection

Football Kenya Federation (FKF) Kakamega Branch has noted with concern a series of misleading and inaccurate claims circulating on social media regarding the selection of teams for the upcoming Bingwa Fest tournament. In the interest of transparency and to safeguard the integrity of the competition, FKF Kakamega wishes to clarify the following:
1. Promise Starlets Promise Starlets was not allocated a slot for this edition of Bingwa Fest. The core objective of the tournament is to empower and uplift as many teams as possible across the county. Given that Promise Starlets recently won the Governor’s Cup and received KES 1.5 million in prize money, the Federation deemed it equitable to extend this opportunity to another deserving team to promote broader development and competitive balance.
2. Mumias Representation Claims that Mumias does not have a women’s team are false. The team awarded a slot, Legacy Queens, originates from Mumias West and finished third in the same league table where Promise Starlets emerged second. Their inclusion is therefore fully justified on them being a host team as one of the pitches is in Mumias West, sporting merit and geographical representation.
3. Hosting Team and Venue Selection Mchanga FC was initially selected as the host team and would have retained that role had the tournament been held during the school holidays. However, all proposed school venues, including Approved School declined to release their pitches during the school term. Because the matches are scheduled for midweek, it was not possible to secure any other venue within the town in school facilities. Consequently, Masinde Muliro University of Science and Technology (MMUST) accepted to host the tournament. MMUST has a community-based team, PEFA FC, which participates in the Sub-Branch League, and this is the basis upon which the host team was selected, alongside consideration of local fanbase and logistical convenience.
4. Inclusion of NSL Teams (Mwira and The Iron Ladies Soccer Club) All National Women Leagues teams in Kakamega County were automatically allocated slots in the tournament.

In addition, two slots per zone were reserved for Branch League teams based on merit. Furthermore, six slots were allocated to teams from neighboring counties in line with the Bingwa Fest inter-county participation framework. The senior teams granted slots have academies or junior teams whose players do not participate in the WNSL. These junior players are therefore eligible to compete in Bingwa Fest without violating player eligibility regulations.
5. Malimali FC Malimali FC was not considered because the club does not participate in any recognized FKF league. Only teams that are actively competing in FKF leagues are eligible for Bingwa Fest participation.
FKF Kakamega hereby invites the public, stakeholders, and football fans to attend the Bingwa Fest and independently scrutinize every match. Any team found to field ineligible players will be subject to immediate disqualification in accordance with tournament rules.

The one-day tournament, which kicked off at 8:00am and ended with an awards ceremony at 3:00pm, brought together some of the county’s most promising young football talents in the U13, U15 and U17 Boys categories.

To further motivate competition and reward excellence, winning teams in each category (U13, U15 and U17 Boys) will be officially crowned FKF Kakamega County Champions at the end of the tournament. In addition, all participating teams will be presented with footballs as a token of appreciation and support for grassroots development, reinforcing FKF Kakamega County’s commitment to nurturing talent and improving training resources at the community level.
Speaking on the incentives, FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei noted:
“Beyond competition, we want to support our teams materially. Awarding county champions and presenting balls to participating teams is our way of encouraging continued training, growth, and sustainability of youth football across Kakamega County.”

There is renewed optimism for football development in Kakamega County after H.E. FCPA Fernandes Barasa, OGW pledged to give audience to the FKF Kakamega branch on how to support and partner with FKF Kakamega teams after the Malava Parliamentary by-elections to be held on 27th November 2025.
Speaking to the FKF Kakamega delegation, Governor Barasa reaffirmed his commitment to collaborating on key initiatives aimed at strengthening football structures, talent pathways, and resource mobilisation across the county.
During the meeting, the governor received an FKF-branded jersey presented by FKF Kakamega officials led by Chairman Jeff Mudembei and Secretary General Rajab Wangalwa. He appreciated the gesture and assured the officials of his readiness to engage in programmes that uplift both grassroots and elite football.
FKF Kakamega leadership expressed optimism, noting that the governor’s goodwill comes at a crucial time as preparations for the 2025/26 season intensify. Player registration and renewal for the upcoming County League season is currently underway, with clubs encouraged to complete their processes early to ensure a smooth kickoff.
In addition, a coaching refresher course is scheduled for December, aimed at equipping county coaches with updated technical skills and modern methodologies to raise the competitiveness of local teams.
With such collaborative efforts on the horizon, FKF Kakamega believes a strong partnership with the County Government will unlock greater opportunities and reinforce Kakamega’s status as one of Kenya’s leading football hubs.
In a major boost to women’s football in Kakamega County, Hon. Osanga, an aspiring Member of Parliament for Matungu Constituency, has pledged to provide an ambulance for Kakamega Starlets during all their home matches.
The pledge came after Hon. Osanga attentively listened to FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei, who spoke passionately on behalf of the team, highlighting the immense challenges faced by community-based women’s clubs—especially the high cost of meeting mandatory matchday requirements such as ambulance services.
Ambulance hire remains one of the most expensive requirements for home fixtures, often costing at least Ksh 10,000 per match. The timely commitment by Hon. Osanga will therefore ease the team’s financial strain while enhancing player safety and medical readiness during league matches.

The agreement, signed in Nairobi, is seen as a major boost to the sport’s revival, marking the return of substantial private sector support after a prolonged period of financial uncertainty in local football.
“A transformative chapter begins for Kenyan football,” said FKF President Hussein Mohammed. “We extend our gratitude to SportPesa for their belief in our vision. This partnership is a crucial advancement in attracting more collaborations, and we are resolutely committed to upholding the confidence you’ve placed in our hands.”

The Way Forward
Both FKF chairmen emphasized that such disruptions should never happen again and pledged to tighten coordination between event organizers, FKF branches, and local authorities.
FKF Kakamega Chairman Jeff Mudembei stated:
“Going forward, all events will have formal bookings and security arrangements in place. We want our players to enjoy football without interference.”

Despite having a busy schooling schedule, the schools’ half-term and vacation days will speed up the leagues, according to the FKF Kakamega branch Chairman Mr Jeff Mudembei. While launching the leagues, the chairman reiterated that free time will be utilized like the half-term period to ensure all categories of youth leagues have been played across the county daily. “This will help us beat the FIFA calendar, even with the youths in schools; for sure, Kakamega is the home of football talents from what we’re seeing in our U13 youth leagues,” the chairman stated. He further emphasized the importance of these leagues in fostering not only talent but also discipline and teamwork among the young players.
